Counting down the no-nos during audits: Number 6: Do not mind that liquid spill, that is probably harmless

/ December 26, 2018

As auditors for the pharmaceutical industry, we have the opportunity to visit the most wonderful places as well as the most interesting companies. We are lucky enough to conduct audits all over the world.

Apart from visiting some exemplary companies, we sometimes encounter things we would rather not see. In these last few weeks of 2018, we are counting down the 10 most surprising experiences of 2018 which we truly hope we will not encounter again: some funny, some awful, some just completely unacceptable. And as we are only human after all, some things that happened were through our own making.

Number 6: Do not mind that liquid spill, that is probably harmless

Although the suppliers audits we perform are focused on quality and quality assurance, we also like to take care of the environment and worker safety. At a certain company we audited, we were walking outside to go from the production building to a warehouse. At some point, our route was blocked by an enormous pool of a colorless, odorless but steaming liquid. This liquid seemed to be coming from the production building. As this pool was blocking the only possible way to the warehouse, we were a bit confused about what to do.

Until the QA manager indicated: “We can walk through it, it is probably harmless”.

Not really the statement we were hoping for, especially since he admitted he had no clue what the liquid was, but was sure that if it was harmful, it would not be spilled like that.

We like to have confidence in people, companies and products, but there are limits.

Next will be number 5: Oops, the cleanroom is flooded.

As you can see, after reading this countdown series, we have extensive auditing experience and have encountered almost all possible situations: good and bad.
